Who qualifies as an Instructor at NIU?
An Instructor is a nontenure-track faculty who meets the following criteria- is hired on a year-to-year basis
- has been teaching at least one semester at a half-time load
- teaches 50% time or more (two or more classes per semester)
- is not on a grant
What does the union chapter do?
Our union officers work for everyone in the Instructors' Collective Bargaining Chapter or Unit(this includes anyone who meets the criteria, whether or
not they have joined the union). Negotiators determine salary raises and working conditions and protect the
existing contractural rights of all Instructors in the Chapter. The officers troubleshoot for individuals on campus, help
enforce the contract with the NIU administration, and represent members' interests at the state and national union levels.
There are many additional benefits from AFT for instructors who do join our local chapter. Contact any of the officers for more information.
